This small NATIVE tree or tall shrub is often multi-trunked and usually grows10-15 ft. tall but can reach 35 ft. in height. The large, crooked, spreading branches form an irregular, open crown. The floral display of witch hazel is unique. Its fragrant, yellow flowers with strap-like, crumpled petals appear in the late fall, persisting for some time after leaf drop. Lettuce-green, deciduous leaves maintain a rich consistency into fall when they turn brilliant gold. Bark is smooth and gray.
The aromatic extract of leaves, twigs, and bark is used in mildly astringent lotions and toilet water. A myth of witchcraft held that a forked branch of Witch-hazel could be used to locate underground water. The foliage and fruits slightly resemble those of the shrub hazel (Corylus). Upon drying, the contracting capsule can eject its small seed as far as 30 (9 m).

It bears stunning dark red flowers in mid to late winter. 'Diane' has an open, spreading growth habit, reaching an approximate height and spread of 12feet. The broad oval leaves are mid green in colour turning yellow and red in autumn. Like all Witch hazels, the flowers are frost resistant and the plant is fully hardy.

AKA Magic Fire/charm Witch Hazel Shrub.
A beautiful vase shaped, spreading shrub that is slightly more upright than the other hamamelis intermedia varieties with a height and spread of 4 x 3 meters in 20 years. They are particularly noted for their spidery, often fragrant, mid- to late winter flowers which appear before the spring foliage emerges. FIRE CHARM or Magic Fire ('Feuerzauber') has red flowers. It typically matures as an upright-spreading shrub to 9-11' tall and to 10-14' wide. Showy flowers in axillary clusters bloom along the bare stems from mid- to late winter. Each flower has four, narrow, ribbon-like, twisted and crinkled, coppery-orange-red petals (each to 7/8" long). Calyx is purple-red. Flowers are mildly fragrant. Ovate-rounded, medium green leaves (to 5” long) turn attractive shades of orange and red in fall.Hamamelis are also of great value to wildlife. This shrub requires a well drained, acid - neutral soil in sun or partial shade and can tolerate some exposure.

This is the cultivar Jelena, a hybrid produced from crossing the Japanese and the Chinese Witchhazels. There are a number of cultivars originating from this cross. Hamamelis sinensis tends to be more fragrant while Hamamelis japonica is, possibly, more deciduous but doesn't smell so nice. They hybrids are wonderful and this is one of the best. I have always liked it and 'Diane' for their fall colour and wonderful blooms.  The petals roll up into tight coils at night or when temperatures are too cold.

Rich coppery-orange flowers on this unusual shrub add blazing color to the winter landscape. Flowers with wavy, strap-like petals appear on the bare branches. Plant near entries and patios.
